George's Speech

(written on request for George to read at his daughter's wedding)

I welcome you all to a wedding
Or at least those who bothered to show
If you didn't enjoy it so far
Then perhaps it's time to go?

You may think you know the order
And the timing of events
But I'm the one in charge
And I will decide the contents

I'm George, but I think you know that?
And here's my charming wife Jan
But let's take you on a journey
To when it all began.

It started at the graveyard
Strange, but yes it's true
Too young to be served in the pub
They hung out with a ghostly crew.

It's getting rather spooky
Or perhaps the graveyard's blessed
Do you remember Lorna & Martin
Who are building their love nest?

We mustn't forget the time
They had to buy a new car
The old one was ripped to pieces
When Mad Max went a little too far

And now my baby girl
That's Genna, don't be mistaken,
Has just walked down the aisle
She hasn't been foresaken

Her childhood sweetheart, Graeme
Is here to collect a packet
When the call came in for a driver
He was told to wear a jacket

Billy and Marylyn warned him
They said "don't be remiss"
So now they're real proud of their son
Taking care of little Rhys.

Perhaps the next celebration
Could be for our Michelle
She's dating Graeme's brother
So the same set of in-laws as well!!

That's the end of my short ditty
I hope you enjoyed the tale
But I must relay my instructions
That the poem's not for sale.
